How to Clean Sex Toys (Including Fleshlights and Strokers)

By the ToyFindr team · Updated

Clean toys last longer and are safer to use. How you clean a toy depends on two things: what it is made of, and whether it has electronics inside.

Know your material

  • Non-porous (silicone, glass, stainless steel, hard ABS plastic): easy to clean thoroughly with soap and water. Silicone, glass and steel without electronics can usually be boiled for a few minutes.
  • Porous (TPE, TPR, PVC, "jelly", "cyberskin" and most realistic skin materials): tiny pores can hold bacteria, so they cannot be fully sanitized. Wash them carefully, keep them to one person and use condoms if you share.

The product pages on ToyFindr list the material of each toy.

How to clean most toys

  • Wash after every use, and before the first use.
  • Use warm water and a mild, unscented soap or a toy cleaner.
  • Waterproof toys can go under the tap; splash-proof toys should only be wiped with a damp, soapy cloth, keeping water away from charging ports and buttons.
  • Rinse well, pat dry and let the toy air-dry completely before storing.
  • Avoid harsh chemicals, alcohol and bleach unless the maker recommends them, and only use a dishwasher if the instructions say it is safe.

How to clean a Fleshlight or stroker sleeve

  • Take the sleeve out of its case.
  • Rinse the inside with warm water (not hot) right after use. Many makers advise water only, or a toy cleaner made for sleeves, since soap can damage some materials.
  • Gently flush the canal; turn the sleeve inside out only if the maker says it is designed for that.
  • Shake out the water and let it air-dry fully, standing open or on a drying rack, before putting it back in the case.
  • Many brands recommend a renewing powder (usually cornstarch-based) once dry to keep the material soft.

Storage

Store toys clean and dry, separately from each other (some materials react when they touch), away from heat and sunlight. A cloth pouch or the original box works well. Charge rechargeable toys every few months even when you are not using them.

Find cleaners, pouches and renewing powder in toy care and accessories.

Frequently asked questions

Can you boil sex toys?

Only non-porous toys without electronics, such as solid silicone, glass and stainless steel, and only if the maker allows it. Never boil vibrators, TPE or PVC.

How often should you clean a sex toy?

After every use, and before using it for the first time.

Can I use soap on a Fleshlight?

Many makers recommend warm water or a dedicated sleeve cleaner instead of regular soap, which can damage the material. Check the instructions for your sleeve.
